The Scott Trust Endowment Ltd (STEL) is a diversified portfolio that exists to secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity by adopting a long-term investment strategy. The endowment takes a proactive stance to responsible investing, believing that sustainable, long-term returns are dependent on well-functioning, well-governed, social, environmental and economic systems. STEL is particularly focused on engagement to address the risks from climate change and threats to nature, and on improving diversity, equity and inclusion both in the investment industry and in the impact of underlying investments. It was among the first to divest its fossil fuel investments and has since acted as a cornerstone for funds investing in solutions that support a low-carbon economy.
