At GIST Impact, we measure a company’s impact on natural, human, social, and financial capital in monetary terms. While companies track financial impacts through Profit & Loss statements, they often ignore externalities—unaccounted effects on third parties. This limited focus distorts the true value a company creates or subtracts from our environment or society, which can ultimately lead to market failures and reduced wellbeing.
We address this gap using the Four Capitals Approach to impact accounting, which evaluates business impacts across natural, human, social, and financial capital. This method provides a comprehensive view of a company’s "true value" by including the costs of its positive and negative externalities. We do this by leveraging thousands of peer-reviewed scientific papers and sophisticated economic modelling. The result is a holistic perspective on company performance, and puts a monetary value on unpriced risks and opportunities resulting from corporate activity.
Our methodology is rooted in an EU-, UN- and G8-backed study titled ‘The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity’ (TEEB), whose study leader was our CEO, Pavan Sukhdev. GIST Impact’s impact and biodiversity data is now being used by, among others, a leading European sovereign wealth fund and a large German insurer.
