A new poll has revealed that 79% of Britons support their pensions being invested in renewable energy – including around half (53%) of Reform UK voters.

The national YouGov survey confirmed that savers across the country overwhelmingly back their retirement pots being allocated to this growing green sector. Liberal Democrat voters were the most supportive, with 96% in favour, followed by Green Party voters at 89%, and Labour Party voters at 88%.

But strikingly, the data showed 53% of Reform UK voters would support their pensions being invested in renewable energy. It also showed that 32% of the party’s voters oppose this type of retirement savings investment, including just 14% who are strongly opposed.

The eye-opening statistics come after Reform UK’s deputy leader, Richard Tice, released consecutive letters threatening both companies involved in the renewable energy sector and their “investors” about pursuing UK-based projects.

The report further showed that 73% of Conservative voters were in support of their pension being invested in renewable energy, despite leader Kemi Badenoch’s vow to rip up the Climate Change Act. Only 16% of Tory voters were opposed to this type of pension investment, including just 8% who were strongly opposed.

Overall, the poll found that just 10% of respondents felt some degree of opposition to their pension being invested in renewable energy, with just 4% strongly opposed. 11% answered “don’t know” in response to the question.

The UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF) commissioned the polling ahead of its annual Good Money Week, which began on Monday (October 6).

This brings together different sectors of the financial services industry to consider how they can help the public make better choices with their pensions, savings and investments, and better understand the positive impact they can have on the environment and wider society when it comes to their decisions.

Commenting on the poll’s findings, UKSIF CEO James Alexander said:

“This data shows political parties that have opposed the vital rollout of renewable energy have grossly misjudged their voters’ views.

“Globally, the green economy ranks as the second-fastest-growing sector after technology. People across Britain clearly recognise that renewable energy is booming and want to see their pension pots invested in this thriving industry.

“Politicians of all parties should recognise the insights of their voters and support this rapidly expanding sector.”
