Commenting on Tony Blair’s criticism of net zero emissions targets, UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF) CEO James Alexander said today (May 27, 2026):

“As the UK endures another fossil fuel supply crunch, the last thing we should do is step back from commitments to end our dependence on oil and gas.

“Net zero emissions targets are vital policy signals for investors, giving them the certainty needed to deploy billions of pounds of capital into clean energy projects.

“Attracting this investment is critical to securing our energy system against future crises, while creating jobs and driving growth across the wider economy.

“With countries around the world now racing to reduce their overreliance on oil and gas, the UK cannot afford to lose its status as a leading destination for renewable energy investment.”

Notes to editors:

  • UKSIF’s recent membership survey showed 87% of respondents expect both global and UK-specific “investment in renewable energy projects” to increase following the start of the hostilities – read here.
